The difference between a CCTV system that actually protects your property and one that just looks impressive comes down to design. Camera placement, lens choice, resolution, low-light performance, storage sizing, network configuration and physical cable protection all matter. Cheap kits from a hardware store might record something, but when you actually need to identify a face or a number plate, they routinely fail.

Every system we install is IP-based, recorded to a dedicated NVR (Network Video Recorder), and set up with secure remote viewing so you can check in from your phone whether you are at work in Grafton or on holiday interstate. Data stays on your NVR — not on someone else's cloud — with encrypted remote access for you and anyone you authorise.

Camera placement. A single well-placed camera at the right angle is more valuable than four bad ones. We cover the actual approach paths, not just walls. Entrances get overhead-facing cameras for identification. Driveways get long-lens cameras positioned to catch number plates.

Lens and resolution matched to the job. A wide-angle camera covering a large yard is useless for identifying faces at the front door. We mix wide-angle overview cameras with narrower-lens identification cameras where it matters.

Low-light performance. Most incidents happen at night. We specify true low-light and infrared cameras with adequate IR range for the distances involved. Dark, grainy night footage is a design failure, not a limitation of the technology.

Proper cabling. Cat6 in conduit or UV-rated cable clipped tidily under eaves. Not zip-tied to a gutter and left to weather in the Yamba salt air.

Secure network setup. Cameras isolated on their own VLAN or subnet where possible, default passwords always changed, firmware kept up to date, remote access through the manufacturer's secure app rather than open port forwards.

Adequate storage. We size the recorder for at least two to four weeks of continuous recording at the resolution and frame rate you actually need — long enough to notice an incident and pull the footage before it is overwritten.

Privacy compliance. Cameras positioned so they capture your property, not the neighbour's living room. For holiday rentals, we follow current NSW short-term rental accommodation code requirements — external areas only, clearly disclosed to guests.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Australia?+

Do CCTV cameras record 24/7?+

They can, but continuous recording quickly fills storage. Most of our Yamba installs use motion-triggered recording with a short continuous buffer — this keeps 4+ weeks of useful footage on a modest NVR while still catching every event.

Can CCTV work without internet?+

Yes. The cameras and NVR record locally on your network and do not need internet. You only need internet if you want to view footage remotely from your phone.

What's the difference between IP and analog CCTV?+

Analog (HDCVI/AHD) sends video over coax; IP sends it over Cat6 network cable. IP delivers higher resolution, easier expansion, and better night performance — it is the current standard for every install we do.

Should CCTV cameras be visible or hidden?+

Visible. Deterrence is most of the value of a CCTV system, and NSW law requires reasonable notice that surveillance is in use — particularly for holiday rentals. We choose neat, purpose-built mounting points that read as professional rather than intrusive.
